Can You Identify The Ships That You See Offshore On Cape Cod?

So many times while we are looking out from Fort Hill or Hemenway Landing, we see these huge ships out on the horizon and wonder what they are. (Click on blog link for other photos.)

We downloaded a free app called MaritimeTraffic-Ship Tracking to see if we could learn anything. If you click on the green marker, you can see the name of the ship, what kind of ship it is, where it originated and where it’s going.

We zoomed in to see it and it looked just like picture on the app.

Another ship that we saw was a research and survey vessel called the Henry B. Bigelow.

It’s been fun just playing around with the app and learning about some of the vessels that we see off-shore. Have you ever used this app?

  1. That is very cool! Really great to be able to identify the ships you see way off shore. We try to use a similar app here on the coast of Northern California called Vessel Finder but we usually don’t have enough wifi or cell reception to be able to use it. Using our binoculars we can often read the name of those large container vessels of which there are many.
