“Uncle Tim’s Bridge was established in 1783, when it was first named “The New Bridge”. Uncle Tim’s Bridge crosses Duck Creek and connects Hamblen Island to the central village of Wellfleet. In the 1800s Timothy E. Daniels, known as Uncle Tim, had a retail shop located right across from the bridge which bears his name to this day. Uncle Tim’s Bridge is listed on the State Historic Register.”

  1. An interesting paper by Stephen P. Broker, titled Technological Change in a Coastal New England Village, 1790-1990 — The Duck Creek Harbor Site, Wellfleet, Massachusetts, states that due to changing water levels over the years, mud accumulated in Duck Creek now contains many artifacts from ships and businesses of the past.

    “The richest deposits of artifacts, however, are found below Uncle Tim’s Bridge, a foot bridge which has connected Commercial Street to Cannon Hill and Route 6 since at least 1844…[Tim] Daniels used to operate a ship chandlery business at the head of the bridge. A few wooden pilings jut out of the sand and mud to mark the location of the two chandlery buildings that once stood here.”
