You can see Red Squirrels on just about any trail around here on the Cape. This little guy was playing hide and seek on the White Cedar Swamp Trail in Wellfleet. (Click on blog link for other photo.)

While I don’t think the speaker in the poem should have teased this squirrel, at least he appreciated its ability to bounce back from a threat:
From The Appointment by William Butler Yeats
Being out of heart with government
I took a broken root to fling
Where the proud, wayward squirrel went,
Taking delight that he could spring;
And he, with that low whinnying sound
That is like laughter, sprang again
And so to the other tree at a bound…
