Early yesterday morning, about 5:30 am, it was so beautiful that I decided to bike out to Coast Guard Beach. I hadn’t biked there in quite a while. And what a treat awaited me there! (Click on blog link for other photos.)
As I was rounding the bike trail up by Coast Guard Beach, I could hear the distinct call of the Northern Bobwhite, “Bob-white! Bob-white!” I slammed on my brakes and listened. I could hear 2 Bobwhites calling to each other. Oh my! I hadn’t seen or heard one near there… ever!
I could see the first one on top of the roof of Coast Guard Station (in last 2 photos). He was just singing away. What a beautiful sound! It reminds me of my childhood by the beach where my dad taught me many bird calls. I stopped and took many, many photos, but I didn’t have my camera with me which has a nice zoom, only my iPhone.
I’ve seen (or heard) 4 Bobwhites this summer, and nowhere near each other. Maybe this rare Northern Bobwhite is making a comeback? I sure hope so! There used to be so many around here.

The rest of the Bobwhite poem from the 7/12 post seems particularly appropriate for this guy:
…Is he hailing some comrade as blithe as he?
Now I wonder where Robert White can be?
O’er the billows of gold and amber grain
There is no one in sight–but, hark again:
“Bob White! Bob White! Bob White!”
Ah! I see why he calls; in the stubble there
Hide his plump ittle wife and babies fair!
So contented is he, and so proud of the same,
That he wants all the world to know his name:
“Bob White! Bob White! Bob White!”
Bob White
