Unusual Harlequin Duck At Coast Guard Beach On Cape Cod.

We were so surprised when we saw this Harlequin Duck on Coast Guard Beach the other day. It seemed happiest out of the water on the sand, but every time someone walked by on the beach, it would scoot back in the water. (Click on blog link for other photos.)

We had never seen a Harlequin Duck before. In looking at a map of its range, Harlequin Ducks are usually seen here more in the winter or in the early spring.

I loved this last photograph as it was trying to dry off and walk along the beach. Such a treat to see this duck but also hope that it gets where it is going soon!

Beautiful Early Morning Reflection On The Salt Marsh On Cape Cod…. But Wait!

I was biking across the salt marsh about 6:30 in the morning when I stopped to take a photograph of the sun’s reflection on the creek. It was so pretty. It looked like a cloudy day with the sun breaking through just a bit. (Click on the blog link to see other photo.)

But wait! I turned around and took another photograph of the salt marsh looking out toward Cape Cod Bay. What a different photograph! The blue skies are sunny with beautiful clouds.

Same day, same place, same time, different direction. Pretty cool, don’t you think?

New Beach Access Path To Coast Guard Beach On Cape Cod!

Yesterday was forecast to be a scorcher so we decided to take an early morning walk on Coast Guard Beach. It was gorgeous, and still somewhat cool. We were surprised at the number of people already on the beach, either to take a walk or just relax. (Click on blog link to see other photos.)

However, when we started to walk to the beach, the path was fenced off with a sign that said “Beach Access” with an arrow pointing to the left. There as a new access path to get to the beach. If you are driving up to the parking lot, it is on the left before you get to the tram stop or bike crossing.

The 2nd photograph shows where the former trail met the beach. The dunes keep washing away in the high tides and storms, making it difficult getting to the beach. In the 3rd photograph, you can see where the former trail  led to the beach (person in photo) as we walked back from Nauset Spit. The water goes all way up to the dunes at high tide, making the beach toward Nauset Spit inaccessible at high tide.

It’s a little bit longer walk from the parking lot, but so much better to get to the beach. The path to the beach is flat, making it much easier for disabled persons to use the beach and the blue-web mat with their fat-tired wheelchairs. People are now sitting on the part of Coast Guard Beach that leads to Nauset Light Beach.   It is a great remedy for a sad situation. But who knows what Mother Nature has in store for Coast Guard Beach in the coming months!
