New Year’s Day was a glorious day here on Cape Cod with sunny skies, little wind and temperatures in the upper 40s. Perfect day for a walk on Coast Guard Beach!
We were so surprised to see how much the erosion had dug away at the dunes by the old path to the beach. At the beginning of last summer, you could walk down the path with a descent decline going down. By the middle of the summer, the decline had gotten so severe that the National Seashore closed that entrance to the beach and made an entirely new path to the beach a little ways away toward Nauset Light Beach.
You can see in the photograph where the fence is blocking the old path above where I am standing and how much the storms have eroded the dunes. It is just incredible!
We had not been on White Cedar Swamp Trail for quite a while. I love this part where the trees are so uniquely shaped. They are so cool! It’s a great hike for a cold or windy day.
The Common Eider is such a beautiful water bird. I love it when I see them swimming around. There are quite a few of them at Boat Meadow Creek and Rock Harbor this winter. (Click on blog link for more photos.)
The first photograph is of an adult male. The 2nd photo is of a male during its first winter. And the last photograph is of a female Common Eider.
Any birders out there, please let me know if this is correct!
I couldn’t decide which one of these photos of this boathouse I liked better… the close-up or the one a little farther away. (Click on blog link for other photo.)
