There’s a lot of activity at Arey’s Pond as those classic, handmade Catboats are getting ready to be put in the water for the season. You can see some of them already at their moorings or at the dock.
It’s such an exciting time of the year… and look at that sky!
Most of the moorings are out at Arey’s Pond with only a few more to go. Pretty soon this pond will be full of custom catboats, sailboats and motorboats all ready for the exciting summer ahead!
There are many ways to get to Pleasant Bay and one of them is by paddling down the Namequoit River in Orleans. This kayaker was enjoying the last part of her trip out to the bay along the quiet and winding river. #orleans #namequoitriver
Yesterday was the 30th Annual Arey’s Pond Cat Gathering, one of the largest gatherings of catboats on the east coast. (Click on blog link for other photo.)
“Our annual Cat Gathering is a time for catboats of all shapes and sizes to come together for a just-for-fun regatta through Pleasant Bay. Every year over 80 boats come together for this parade of sail.”
It was just spectacular to see all of those sailboats out on the water!

It was fun to be out on the water when it motored by. You almost felt like you were “playing with the big boys!”

The Cat Gathering is one of the largest gatherings of catboats on the East Coast. Catboats and other classic wooden boats are invited to participate in this just-for-fun regatta through Little Pleasant Bay, into Pleasant Bay and back.
It was a perfect day with a good wind and sunny skies and lots of catboats out in the bay. I counted about 90 boats in Pleasant Bay! Wow! It was quite a sight to see!
Yesterday was Arey’s Pond’s 2021 14 World’s Regatta on Little Pleasant Bay and Big Pleasant Bay. The regatta was the best of three US Sailing sanctioned races using a windward-leeward course. (Click on blog link for other photos.)
Two races took place in Little Pleasant Bay, and one took place in Big Pleasant Bay. The goal with this event is to work towards making the Arey’s Pond 14′ Catboat a US Sailing recognized one design class.
It was such fun to watch the races, certainly a group of talented sailors out there sailing! If you missed the races yesterday, you can see Arey’s Pond Annual Cat Gathering today on Pleasant Bay.
The water was like glass at Kent Point. I loved this photograph looking out toward Little Pleasant Bay. If you close your eyes, you can imagine all of the sailboats sailing by on a hot summer day.
So pretty, don’t you think?
This was such a beautiful view of Big Pleasant Bay in Harwich on Cape Cod in the winter. Pretty soon it will be teeming with boats, both motorboats and sailboats, eager to get out on the water and enjoy the day!
Phil and I were out scouting different launch sites for kayaking around the Pleasant Bay area when we came across this rock out in the water. Hmmm… What was that on the rock? It was way too early for the Cormorants to be back. (Click on blog link for other photo.)
It wasn’t until I got my binoculars out that I saw that they were seals! Wow! And they were pretty far into Little Pleasant Bay and not very far from shore. I have never seen seals there before, especially in the winter! I did not even know that they were around in the winter. They did appear to be enjoying the sunny day lounging on the rock.
