There was a large flock of about 20 Ring-necked Ducks on Great Pond at Wiley Park the other day. They were just gorgeous!
We saw a lot of these ducks out in Colorado way up high on a pond in the Rocky Mountains, so it’s always a treat to see them here too.
Ring-necked Ducks are medium diving ducks that have a blue-gray bill with a white ring and a black tip. I always wondered why they aren’t called “Ring-billed Ducks.”
Beautiful bird, don’t you think? Have you ever seen a Ring-necked Duck?
I was surprised to still see some ice on Great Pond while hiking at Wiley Park yesterday morning. With the warmer temperatures the past few days, I thought it would all be melted. You can see the Ring-necked Ducks in the distance, but they couldn’t get close to shore with the ice.
I bet after today with temps in the 20s and wind chills in the teens, they’ll be a lot more ice!
The swimming enclosure ropes are up and the beach is ready for summer to begin. It’s such a different scene from 6:00 am when it is quiet and serene to 12:00 pm when there’s noise and the sounds of people enjoying the day. Let the fun begin!
Wiley Park is beautiful any time of the year. This little peak-through of Great Pond was so pretty with the snow on the ice. It’s been a cold winter so far!
It’s been so cold here on the Cape that there were several people ice fishing at Great Pond. You could also see 2 places that were shoveled for skating, although there was no one skating at the time.
We’ve lived here for 10 years and I don’t remember ever seeing ice fishing or ice skating on Great Pond, have you? It sure has been a frigid January!
