This Downy Woodpecker was the cutest little thing. He found this little puddle on the rock, left over from watering the flowers nearby, and decided that was where he was going to take a bath. (Click on blog link for other photos.)
And then mom came back to get him and they made their way up the nearby tree.
The Spotted Wintergreen wildflowers are one of the most interesting of the wildflowers that bloom around here. They have 1″ waxy, white petals that face downward. As they bloom, they start looking up toward the sky and eventually are totally facing the sun. (Click on blog link for other photos.)
They grow in the woods in July and August, so you have plenty of time to see them. So pretty and delicate…
Have you seen any Spotted Wintergreen this summer?
The sunrises over the salt marshes on Cape Cod are so different each day. This one was gorgeous with all the clouds in the sky and the streaks of sun shining through.
The colors were so pretty at this pond in Provincetown with the yellow Irises in bloom. I loved the sky with its pretty clouds contrasting the bright green foliage around the pond.
Phil and I used to kayak to Monomoy Island from Stage Harbor in the early 2000s, before the Great Whites came. There were always lot of seals about but you never had to worry back then. Our favorite place to stop for a picnic lunch was on the inside of South Beach, a stretch of beach that was miles long extending from Chatham almost to Big Monomoy Island.
I was so surprised to see South beach a few days ago with signs that said, “Do not walk on sandbar.” This beautiful beach that was soooo long was now only a tiny little sandbar. The Atlantic Ocean had breached the beach and finally swallowed it all up, except for this little piece. Wow!
