Northern Gannet Diving For Food At Coast Guard Beach In Eastham On Cape Cod

gannett1

We were surprised to see this Northern Gannet diving for food at Coast Guard Beach the other day. At first we weren’t sure what kind of diving bird it was as it plummeted into the ocean over and over again.

Northern Gannets dive vertically into the sea at velocities of up to 62mph. It was just amazing to watch. He would fly around for a bit and then dive head first straight into the water while tucking his wings in like a missile.

And then he flew away. It was fun looking in my bird book to identify what kind of diving bird he was. Have you ever seen a Northern Gannet diving into the sea?

Our New Beachy Mailbox For Our New Home On Cape Cod

mailbox1blog

When we decided to build a home here on Cape Cod last summer, we ordered a special mailbox that we could look forward to as we packed and got ready to leave Colorado.

It just arrived in the mail and I love it! It is perfect for our love of the beach and the shore birds on the Cape! Love that little Oystercatcher!

The Great Blue Heron Is One Of My Favorite Birds On The Salt Marsh On Cape Cod

grblue4

The Great Blue Heron has always been one of my favorite birds, especially on Cape Cod. They are so majestic as they fly and are so elegant.

This Great Blue Heron landed on the salt marsh right by our new home.

It was fun to think that I can walk by these salt marshes each day when we move into our new home and, hopefully,  see a lot of different species of birds!

Update On Manny From My Enjoy Estes Park Blog

Manny1[1]

Those of you who have followed my Enjoy Estes Park Blog for years know “Manny,” my good friend from back east. He loved reading my Blog and commented eloquently every day.

And then he got sick and was in the hospital for a while last spring. He has since moved to a new assisted living home in Massachusetts.

I spoke to him a couple of days ago and he had a hard time remembering me but… as soon as I mentioned my Dad and how we used to drive up and take him out to lunch, he remembered my Dad and me! He loved my Dad and they had a great time together. He was thrilled that we have moved to Cape Cod because that is where we met him about 18 years ago, at the  Audubon Bird Sanctuary in Wellfleet.

So, Manny is doing well. He is a bit forgetful at times and can’t quite master the computer like he used to but… he lives only 10 minutes away from my daughter, so I know I will see him again! It was so great to get back in touch with him. He truly is a special person.

This is the photograph I took one year ago when my Dad and I were out to lunch with him.
