When all of the Baltimore Orioles had migrated at the beginning of September, there was one left who hung out in our yard for 3 days. We wondered why he was still here and if he would indeed leave. (Click blog link for other photo.)
He was one of the most beautiful Baltimore Orioles that I had ever seen. Look at those colors! So I took a few photographs of him sitting on top of the bird feeder. We wondered if he was wondering where everyone else was. He was the only one still around. And then one day, he was gone too.
I took a ride over to Boat Meadow beach to see if there might a pretty sunset and this is what I saw. It was fiery red and just gorgeous! Low tide makes it even more interesting with all of the sandbars.
I’ve seen a lot of Skipper butterflies in our yard and on the trails this summer. Like many Skippers, the Dun Skipper is most easily observed while it is necturing. “They are named for their quick, darting flight habits. Most have their antenna tips modified into narrow, hook-like projections,” which you can see in the photograph.
There are over 3500 species of Skippers recognized. Have you ever seen a Skipper?
I love the reflections of the boats at Rock Harbor when the waters are still. This one was so pretty in the early morning when there was no one around.
So pretty, don’t you think?
