Repairing The Boardwalk On Red Maple Swamp Trail At Fort Hill On Cape Cod

The National Seashore workers have started Phase II of repairing the boardwalk on the Red Maple Swamp Trail at Fort Hill. After years of constant use and stormy winters, many of the boards need to be replaced.

You can still hike the trail from beginning to end as they are working on the offshoot of the trail. It is one of our favorite trails as it has so much to see. You hike in the woods, across a long boardwalk, along the marsh, through the fields and back up to the overlook, which doesn’t get much prettier.

Thank you, National Seashore, for all that you do to make the trails so beautiful for all of us to enjoy.

The Iconic Whale Jawbones Archway At The Penniman House On Cape Cod

“The jawbones of a whale that have stood in front of the Captain Edward Penniman House in Eastham have been removed because they are a danger to the public, according to National Seashore officials.

In whaling communities, use of whale bones to mark a sidewalk or driveway entrance, or as a seaside landmark, dates from when whaling flourished in the 1700s through today. ”

 

The jawbone at the Penniman House at Fort Hill  was installed in 1969. The previous jawbone, installed in 1876, is on display at Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown.

Penniman was one of the most successful whaling captains in New England. He retired at age 53 to Eastham. His home, which was sold to the National Seashore by his youngest granddaughter in 1963,  was restored two years ago and is a must if you come to Cape Cod.

Wild Turkey Loving The Trails At Fort Hill On Cape Cod

It was hilarious to see a Wild Turkey hiking the trails at Fort Hill. He followed  right along the side of the trail as if he knew the rules of a hiker. So funny!

Phil and I hiked down the Red Maple Swamp Trail over the boardwalk to Hemenway Landing. There is a bench there that overlooks Nauset Marsh that we love to sit on and watch whatever is going on., the birds, the boats, the clam diggers… There is always something going on.

Well, we were enjoying ourselves as the day was spectacular when along comes this Turkey! How did he get there? And he was still hiking along the side of the trail! It’s quite a distance away from where we saw him last.

And then we wondered if it was the same Wild Turkey that has been hanging out at our house… maybe he followed us?  🙂

Fort Hill Tree Art On Cape Cod

With all of the windy storms that we’ve had in the past few months, there are a lot of trees and branches strewn about at Fort Hill and everywhere. Someone decided to make some of the trees and branches and and vines into “tree art.” How clever!

It looks pretty cool, don’t you think? And then we started wondering… I hope the vines that they used to tie them together are not Poison Ivy vines!
