Phil and I were taking a walk from Doane Rock to Coast Guard Beach in Eastham on Cape Cod the other day. I saw this huge Red-tailed Hawk feather on the trail. I thought it was so pretty that I took a photograph. I put a penny next to it so you could see how big it was.
A couple of days later I was filling our bird bath and noticed this tiny little feather floating in the water. I wonder what kind of bird it was from? So I put a penny next to it so you could see how tiny it was.
I could see the vibrant colors in the sky so I jumpd in my car and headed to Boat Meadow Beach on Cape Cod Bay. This is what I saw when I got there. Wow!
This beautiful Orange Sulfur butterfly was flitting from Zinnia to Zinnia at my home here on Cape Cod. I have never seen one before.
Orange Sulfur butterflies are about 2″ in wingspan. They are overall yellow with bright orange and black wing borders- solid in males and broken in females. They have 1-2 red-ringed spots on their hindwings.
Have you ever seen an Orange Sulfur butterfly? Pretty, don’t you think?
This Lesser Yellowlegs was strutting about Goose Pond at the Mass Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellfleet on Cape Cod. What a beautiful bird.
A Lessler Yellowlegs is about 10.5″ tall with a long bill and bright yellow legs. We have seen them frequently at the Mass Audubon in Wellfleet. This is a great place to hike through the woods, along the river, out through the marsh and to the beach. There are so many different varieties of birds and wildlife to see.
It was a glorious day to walk out to Nauset Spit on Cape Cod from Coast Guard Station. Nauset Spit is where Nauset Beach splits and lets the water into Nauset Marsh. It is ever changing with the changing of the beach sand.
The last time we had been there was about 10 years ago before we moved to Colorado. We had paddled our kayaks out through Nauset Marsh and had a picnic in that same spot. It was so much fun.
We are definitely looking forward to getting our kayaks out next summer and paddling out to Nauset Spit for a picnic. Can’t wait!
