Cute Little Muskrat At The Mass Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary In Wellfleet On Cape Cod

We were taking a hike along the Silver Spring Trail at the Mass Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary the other day when I saw some movement among the Pond Lilies. A turtle could not cause that much movement. What could it be?

We watched this little Muskrat swim across the little inlet and then come up on shore about 3 feet from us. It was very dark in the shade and there were a lot of branches and leaves, but we got a couple of photographs of him.

He’s about the size of a rat. Look at those feet and that long tail. Have you ever seen a Muskrat?

Gorgeous Kingfisher At Goose Pond At The Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary On Cape Cod

It was a gorgeous day at the Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on Cape Cod. We were ready for a nice walk and maybe a few bird photographs. We were treated to an array of many different wildlife photographs. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing.

This is one of our favorite’s! The mighty Kingfisher landed on the log out in the middle of Goose Pond and then something scared all of the birds nearby. They flew just as Phil was clicking away.

Pretty cool, don’t you think?

Horseshoe Crabs In Cape Cod Bay

I took a walk along the beach the other day at high tide and there were Horseshoe Crabs everywhere! I counted 55 in one little area. I contacted the expert at the Massachusetts Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellfleet to tell him what I had seen. He said that with the warmer weather now, the Horseshoe Crabs will be very active.

Did you know that Horseshoe crabs are an ancient group of arthropods whose bodies are encased in a hard, oval shell? They have a long, rigid tail and five pairs of legs that they use for crawling, swimming, and gathering food.

It was really quite a site to see!

Beautiful Greater Yellowlegs At the Wellfleet Audubon Sanctuary On Cape Cod

It was low tide at the Wellfleet Audubon Sanctuary on Cape Cod so we were able to walk all the way out to the beaches. You have to walk part of the way on a boardwalk that is submerged when the tides are higher.

We were treated to many shorebirds that day darting about the eddies, looking for food.  But this Greater Yellowlegs was absolutely stunning as he waded through the water.
