The famous CG36500 is out of the water and on the grounds at Rock Harbor. It looks like it might be waiting for some work or maybe to be moved. The past few years it has wintered at the dock at Nauset Marine by Meetinghouse Pond.
If you don’t know the story of the CG36500, it is worth doing some research as it is just amazing. If you haven’t seen the Disney movie, “The Finest Hours,” try to find it. It is an unbelievable true story of the CG36500 rescuing the the crew from a sinking ship off of Chatham.
We are so privileged to have this boat in our harbor. It has so many stories to tell and so much local history.
When I saw a photo of what the heavy rains did to the stairway at Thumpertown Beach last week, I had to go see for myself and boy was I impressed!
The entire area had been filled in and packed with new sand so the stairs are well protected. There is also a huge pile of sand in the corner of the parking lot… I presume for future erosion to the high dunes there.
Yesterday The Eastham Painters Guild was enjoying a gorgeous day painting at Boat Meadow Beach. The weather was perfect. There were quite a few painters and so much fun to watch!
With a large storm off the coast and a Small Craft Warning, the waves were huge and the surfers were out en masse yesterday at Lecount Hollow in Wellfleet! (Click on blog link for other photo.)
It was so much fun to stand on top of the dunes and watch them far below battling those gigantic waves! #lecounthollow #surfing #wellfleet
Yesterday was the 30th Annual Arey’s Pond Cat Gathering, one of the largest gatherings of catboats on the east coast. (Click on blog link for other photo.)
“Our annual Cat Gathering is a time for catboats of all shapes and sizes to come together for a just-for-fun regatta through Pleasant Bay. Every year over 80 boats come together for this parade of sail.”
It was just spectacular to see all of those sailboats out on the water!
If you want to see some beautiful art and crafts, come to the Artist’s Cottages behind the Hot Chocolate Sparrow in Orleans. You will be in for a big treat! (Click on blog link for other photo.)
The kids will love it too! They can play a giant game of chess!
The CG36500 is the famous Coast Guard boat that was depicted in the Disney movie, The Finest Hours, because of its incredible rescue of 32 crewmen from a sinking ship off of the coast of Cape Cod in 1952.
During the summer you can go on board and see where those 32 crewmen survived. It is worth the trip just to see the boat. If you haven’t watched the movie, put that on your list too! It’s truly amazing!
“Located right by the docks at Rock Harbor in Orleans, MA, Young’s Fish Market is the perfect place to pick up a lobster roll and your fresh fish, fresh lobster or fresh shellfish for lunch or dinner! Walk the flats, check out the charter boats, and stroll over to Young’s for the catch of the day. You won’t find a more quality or picturesque fish and shellfish market on Cape!”
This is so true and one of our favorite places on Cape Cod!
